New Treatments for Diabetic Neuropathy

If you suffer from diabetic neuropathy, you may spend many nights struggling to overcome the frequent pain and discomfort enough to even sleep. At best, the condition is a nuisance, but for most patients, it can cause indescribable discomfort that not only impacts sleep but their quality of life and mental health, as well. At Spine LLC, we treat many patients living with diabetic neuropathy and believe no one should suffer from this debilitating pain without help.

Treatment Options for Diabetic Neuropathy Pain

There are certain prescription medications that can help alleviate the pain of diabetic neuropathy. We can incorporate those medications into a comprehensive treatment plan that is customized for each patient. These treatments include guided active and physical therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, and stem cell therapy.

At-Home Care for Diabetic Neuropathy

One of the most important ways to help minimize the pain you experience is to carefully manage your blood sugar levels. Regular exercise and an emphasis on diet are essential to maintaining a healthy blood sugar level. It’s also incredibly important to take care of your feet: keep them clean and dry, inspect them regularly for injury, and wear supportive shoes. Other ways to help alleviate pain include compression socks, over-the-counter capsaicin cream, and warm foot soaks.

On the Horizon: New Treatments for Diabetic Neuropathy

We are always looking for new innovations in pain management. While there is no cure, new treatments for diabetic neuropathy are being studied. We’re monitoring these innovative treatment options with hope:

  • In a study testing the use of intraneural facilitation (INF), there was a measurable reduction in pain for those receiving the treatment, compared to those receiving the placebo. INF shows promise as a future treatment for diabetic neuropathy, working to restore blood flow to damaged nerves.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may also have the potential to help alleviate pain from diabetic neuropathy. It works by emitting tiny electrical pulses that prevent pain signals from reaching the brain.

You Don’t Have to Live with Pain

At Spine LLC, we will listen to you and work with you to find the best combination of treatments and lifestyle changes that will help you reclaim your life. We will work with you and your primary physician to help you not just alleviate pain but reclaim your life.
