Nerve blocks are an effective tool for managing pain and can be the right choice for certain patients whose pain remains unresolved with less invasive procedures. Nerve blocks require the use of a needle to inject medication at the site of the nerve; the needle is often guided using x-ray, CT, or ultrasound; video x-ray or fluoroscopy is our most common modality. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis.
What Are Nerve Blocks?
Nerve blocks are directed treatment at the site of the nerve sending the pain signals to your brain. Pain medication and anti-inflammatory medication can be injected at the site to block the pain signals coming from that particular nerve or group of nerves.
Types of Nerve Blocks
There are several distinct kinds of nerve blocks that can be used to treat different forms of pain.
Selective Nerve Block
For the treatment of herniated discs, a selective nerve block can help improve both inflammation and pain. The procedure only takes a few minutes. Although it’s advisable to rest after the procedure, most patients can return to work the same day.
Facet Block
For patients suffering from lower back pain as a result of arthritis, a facet block is an effective treatment to alleviate the pain and allow the patient to regain some mobility and quality of life. The pain relief is long-lasting. Facet blocks can also be used a diagnostic tool to help locate the source of pain for additional treatment.
Sympathetic Block
A sympathetic nerve block can help with leg and back pain associated with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), Sympathetic Maintained Pain, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Herpes Zoster (shingles) involving the legs. Patients can receive additional injections if they show improvement from the first block.
Benefits of Nerve Blocks for Pain Management
Nerve blocks are an effective, minimally invasive treatment for many forms of chronic pain. They offer immediate relief and can be used for short-term or long-term conditions, and in some cases can aid in healing the nerve damage by reducing irritation to the nerve, giving it a chance to heal. Pain relief results in better mobility, improved quality of life, and the ability to resume activities.
